Monkey Island (Đảo Cát Dứa)

Officially named Cat Dua (Pineapple Island) after the wild pandanus pineapples growing across its hillsides, Monkey Island is famous for two things: an exhilarating rock scramble to one of the most photographed panoramic viewpoints in Vietnam, and a troop of wild macaques living near the beach.

Short answer

A 10-minute boat ride from Ben Beo pier. The summit hike offers jaw-dropping 360-degree views over Lan Ha Bay, but watch out for sharp rocks and territorial monkeys.

The summit viewpoint scramble

The true highlight of Monkey Island is the scramble up to the rocky ridge. The trail starts behind the beach and quickly turns into a hands-on climb over jagged karst limestone.

At the summit, you are rewarded with a mind-blowing 360-degree panorama: rows upon rows of green karst peaks stretching toward the horizon across the blue-green water. It is easily one of the most dramatic viewpoints in northern Vietnam.

Heads-up

DO NOT attempt this climb in flip-flops, sandals, or barefoot! The karst limestone is razor-sharp like broken glass and can cause severe cuts if you slip. Always wear trainers or hiking shoes.

Important warning about the monkeys

The long-tailed macaques on the beach were introduced decades ago and have unfortunately become aggressive due to tourists feeding them snacks.

Safety rules with the monkeys:

- Never hold food, chips, plastic bags, or open drink cans in your hands on the beach. Monkeys will jump on you to snatch them.

- Keep sunglasses, phones, and hats secured; monkeys are known to grab shiny objects and run up the trees.

- Do not smile showing your teeth or attempt to pet the baby monkeys, as alpha males perceive this as a threat and may bite. Rabies shots are difficult to obtain on the island.
