Lan Ha Bay Cruises & Boat Trips
Cruising is the quintessential way to experience Lan Ha Bay. Whether you want to drift off to sleep in a 5-star balcony stateroom under limestone cliffs, take an energetic full-day tour with sea kayaking, or hire a traditional private wooden junk for your family, here is how to navigate routes, operators, and pricing.
Fact sheet
Overnight cruises sail from Tuan Chau (Ha Long) or Got pier directly into Lan Ha Bay, while day boats leave from Ben Beo pier on Cat Ba. Lan Ha Bay has fewer boats, cleaner water, and superior kayaking compared to Ha Long.
Types of cruises in Lan Ha Bay
Not all cruises in Lan Ha Bay are the same. They generally fall into three distinct categories based on your travel style, budget, and time:
Overnight cruises (2D1N / 3D2N): Floating boutique hotels sailing through the quieter southern and central bay waters. You dine on board, kayak through sea caves, sleep anchored among towering cliffs, and wake up to morning Tai Chi on the sundeck.
Day boat trips from Cat Ba: Departing every morning from Ben Beo pier (2 km from Cat Ba Town), these classic traditional boats offer 7–8 hours of cruising, visiting Cai Beo village, kayaking at Dark & Bright Cave, and swimming at Ba Trai Dao beaches.
Private boat charters: Traditional wooden junks rented exclusively for couples, families, or private groups. You set the departure time and route, avoiding the standard tour groups.
Where do Lan Ha Bay cruises depart from?
This is the single most common source of confusion for travellers: Lan Ha Bay is administratively part of Hai Phong, but cruises depart from two completely different places depending on the boat:
1. Tuan Chau Marina or Halong International Port (Quang Ninh): Most high-end 4-star and 5-star overnight cruises (like Stellar of the Seas, Mon Chéri, Orchid, and Heritage) depart from these mainland marinas. They sail straight south out of Ha Long waters into Lan Ha Bay within 45 minutes.
2. Ben Beo pier (Cat Ba Island): All local day tours, budget overnight boats, and private fishing charters depart from Ben Beo harbour on the southeastern side of Cat Ba Island. If you are staying in Cat Ba Town, this is your departure point.
If you book an overnight cruise departing from Tuan Chau, almost all operators offer direct limousine shuttle transfers picking you up at your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter (around 2.5 to 3 hours travel time via the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway).

Questions people ask
How far in advance should I book a Lan Ha Bay cruise?
For peak season (October to April), 5-star luxury overnight cruises frequently sell out 3 to 6 weeks in advance due to limited cabin capacity. Day boat trips from Cat Ba can usually be booked 1 to 2 days ahead.
Is food included on cruises?
Yes. Overnight cruises include all meals (lunch, multi-course dinner, light breakfast, and morning brunch/buffet). Day trips include a freshly cooked Vietnamese seafood lunch.
What happens if there is bad weather or a storm?
All sailing permits in Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long are regulated by the local Port Authority. In the event of a typhoon or tropical depression, the port authority cancels permits for safety. Cruise operators provide a full refund or free rescheduling.
